Academic Support Center Mission
The mission of the Academic Support Center at Altamaha Technical College is to enable every learner in the service delivery area of Appling, Jeff Davis, Long and Wayne counties to acquire the necessary skills in reading, speaking and writing so that they will be able to successfully compete in today’s workplace and exercise their full citizenship.
Academic Support Center Entrance Requirements
Classes are available to all persons over the age of 16 who are not enrolled in any high school program. All classes are provided at no cost.
Program Offerings:
| Adult Basic Education (ABE) |
| Adult Basic Education is a program of instruction designed for adults who need to improve their reading, math and language skills to function more effectively in society, on a job or in the family. The coursework is specifically designed to help students prepare for the GED examination. |
| General Education Development (GED) |
| The GED program prepares adults to take the five GED tests required to complete a high school equivalency. Subjects include writing, language arts, social studies, science and math. The GED is recognized nationally as a legal equivalent of a high school diploma. The GED serves the same purpose as a high school diploma in meeting most job requirements and is accepted in place of a high school diploma at most colleges and universities. Participants in this program take the Official GED Practice Tests which provides an accurate measure of whether the student is adequately prepared to take the GED Tests. Altamaha Technical College offers the GED Tests regularly throughout the year. (click here for the current schedule) |
| English as a Second Language/Citizenship (ESL) |
| ESL is a program designed to improve the English language skills of those adults whose native language is not English. The class covers grammar, conversational English, American idioms and language skills needed for everyday life. Preparation for the U. S. Citizenship test is also available. |
| Academic Support |
| Academic support services are available for individuals who want to enroll in an Altamaha Technical College program but are unable to pass the ASSET or Compass entrance exam requirements. Assistance in reading, math and/or language is available. Also, free tutoring services are available for students who are enrolled in Altamaha Technical College classes. |
| Workplace Literacy |
| Workplace literacy classes are provided to employees in conjunction with their employer. The classes are designed to offer educational training as it relates to the job. Enhancement of employee knowledge, skills and productivity are the ultimate goals of ABE, GED and ESL courses. All classes are customized to meet the needs of the employer and employee. |
| Work Ready Assessment Preparation (WRAP) |
| If you are a job seeker and would like to earn a Georgia Work Ready Certificate by taking the WorkKeys assessment, WRAP can prepare you for the test. By earning the Georgia Work Ready Certificate you can show a potential employer the skills and knowledge you possess. WRAP is a computer-based program that allows a student to work at his or her own pace while mastering the necessary skills. The WorkKeys assessment is now available at no charge at Altamaha Technical College. |
| Success in School and Life |
| This nine-week class is required for all 16, 17 & 18 year-old students who enroll in the ABE or GED program. The purpose of this class is to help the young adult to be successful in school and work. Topics include self motivation, goal setting, time management, identifying self-defeating habits, building self-esteem, and career exploration. This class is available on the Jesup campus only. |
